    The Google Blog announced a new feature for Google Local business ads, named “custom map icons.” Basically, for the pinpoints found in Google Local/Maps, you can customize that pinpoint with a favicon like image.     MediaNews Group, which bought the San Jose Mercury News from McClatchy, becomes the third newspaper group to employ a “guaranteed clicks” geotargeted search program for the local business market. Powered by WebVisible, which McClatchy is also using, the product is the essentially the same as what the yellow pages publishers have been selling for the past year or so. These “guaranteed clicks” products offer a simplified version of SEM for the local market. Campaign set up and fulfillment is managed by the third party vendor (WebVisilble in this case). Remember on July 11th when we reported that Yahoo Tests Redirecting Some Searches To Site Explorer? So which queries exactly do this?   • Google’s Costs To Increase With Data Center Needs & Increased Employee Compensation
    CNN Money reports that due to increased costs of data center and the demand for higher employee compensation, Google’s costs will rise. The 10-Q report, Google commented, “Our cost of revenues will increase in 2006 primarily as a result of anticipated increases in traffic acquisition and data center costs, although traffic acquisition costs may fluctuate as a percentage of advertising revenues,” and “our cash-based compensation per employee will likely increase.” More details at CNN Money….
  • Google Pays AOL $400M In Ad Deal
    Bloomberg reports that Google will be paying AOL up to $400 million in an ad deal. The report says “Google will make as much as $100 million in co-marketing payments and give AOL up to $300 million in advertising credits over the life of the agreement.” More details at Bloomberg.com….
  • Google Video Replaces Froogle & Expandable More Link Added To Google Home Page
    Philipp Lenssen spotted that on Google.com, they have removed Froogle, added Video and added a “more” link that opens up some more options, including “books,” “froogle,” “groups,” and “even more.” We have seen the expandable more link tested in the past, looks like it has made it to the front page….
