Peter Morville Keynote and Other Top Stories from SES Toronto 2010

The top story from SES Toronto 2010 was the “kick-ass keynote” by Peter Morville, the President of Semantic Studios and author of Search Patterns.

I interviewed Morville after his keynote about the various different patterns of search behavior in addition to design patterns that his book explores. He discussed the advent of federated search, which helps people search across multiple databases and websites when they don’t know exactly where to look for their answer.

According to Morville, Google is the ultimate federated search platform but is now moving towards a faceted navigation model, where activity is being promoted on the left hand column of the Google interface. But Google is working hard to provide the public with next steps to help further refine their search query and create a more conversational search experience.

Morville also discusses “intertwingularity,” a term authored by Ted Nelson to express the complexity of interrelations in human knowledge.

Although BP wasn’t officially on the agenda, it was discussed at SES Toronto 2010 and by mainstream media covering the event. Matt McGowan, Publisher and Head of U.S. for Incisive Media, and Mike Grehan, VP of Global Content for Incisive Media, were interviewed by Amber MacArthur of Webnation on CP24. MacArthur asked about the story “How Much Is BP Spending On Google Search Ads?,” which Jonathan Allen wrote for Search Engine Watch. In “BP Turns To Google,” Taylor Buley of Forbes.com also wrote about Allen’s story as well as “BP Oil Spill Fuels Legal Marketing Machines,” which was written by Anna Maria Virzi of ClickZ.

Finally, more than 1,100 people are attending SES Toronto 2010, which is an increase from last year. Considering the economy is still recovering at a sluggish pace, the higher turnout is another top story from the show.
