China Blocks News Sites Prior To Dissident Getting Nobel Peace Prize

The Chinese government does not want its citizens watching dissident Liu Xiaobo get his Nobel Peace Prize today, so they have blocked news sites such as CNN, BBC and the Norwegian state broadcaster NRK.

Liu is serving an 11-year sentence for “inciting subversion” – criticizing the government, the UK Guardian reported.

The “apparent censorship follows the blacking-out of reports on foreign media satellite feeds when Liu was named two months ago. Initial reports were blacked out on CNN, BBC and French satellite channel TV5, while the state network China Central Television did not report on the prize,” the Guardian reported.

The Chinese government through foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu stated, “”The Chinese people and the overwhelming majority of people in the world are against this. This is not an issue of human rights; it is an issue of interference of internal affairs.”
