Google Buys eBook Technologies, Is Reader On Way Or Maybe GPad
Speculation that Google plans on creating an electronic book reader were given more fuel with the company’s acquisition of eBook Technologies – “a company that specializes in both hardware and content distribution for electronic readers,” IDG News Service reported.
The site redirects to the notice “eBook Technologies, Inc. is excited to announce that we have been acquired by Google. Working together with Google will further our commitment to providing a first-class reading experience on emerging tablets, e-readers and other portable devices.”
TechCrunch found some cached pages and a banner that stated “eBook Technologies supplies a family of intelligent reading devices and licenses technologies that enable automated publishing and control over content distribution.”
Looking at the banner message the company can help with developing the hardware for an eReader but it also has tools for content distribution helping Google push its content to the various platforms being used now in readers.
It also “licenses technologies that enable automated publishing.” Could Google be extending its publishing platform or covering bases on new technologies yet to be launched?
The creation of their own reader would allow them to compete more directly with Apple. The popularity of the iPad could be the intended direction of this purchase. Add YouTube, their Apps for Android and their own eBook store and the development of a similar device would be a smart play.
For now this is speculation, but Google may have some new electronics to present at next year’s CES.
