St. David's Day Celebrated With Google UK Doodle

Google UK users woke up to a new Google Doodle honoring Saint David’s Day. St. David is the patron saint of Wales.

Since the 18th Century, March 1 has been recognized as a national day of celebration in his honor, although it has yet to be made a bank-holiday. The date was chosen in remembrance of the date he died in 589 AD.

Google kept the logo simple, dressing the second, lower-case “g” in a Welsh hat, face lacing, tied at the “chin,” and a shawl. Traditionally, people have worn leeks and – more recently – daffodils to celebrate the day. Google honored that tradition by including a daffodil on the shawl.
