Nellie Melba Gets Google's Stamp of Approval With 150th Birthday Logo
Google is celebrating the 150th birthday of Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba with a special logo on Google Australia today. The Doodle depicts the famous international soprano singer of the late 1800s and early 1900s in the spotlight singing in the space usually occupied by the “l” in Google.
Melba is also being celebrated in Australia with a special 60-cent stamp based on a portrait by Australian artist Rupert Bunny, the second time she will have graced a postage stamp, the Sydney Morning Herald noted.
Melba was born Helen Porter Mitchell, but used the name Melba in honor of her birthplace in Melbourne. She sang in Australia, England, across Europe, New Zealand, and the U.S. during her career.
In recognition of her World War I charity work, Melba was appointed a Dame Commander in 1918 by the British Empire, later becoming Dame Grand Cross in 1927. She, along with May Whitty, was the first stage performer to become a Dame – the female equivalent of knighthood. She died in 1931.
A portrait of Melba appears on the Australian $100 note. She was also the inspiration for four dishes: Melba toast, Peach Melba, Melba sauce, and Melba Garniture.
Dame Nellie Melba Opera Trust has compiled a list of additional celebrations planned for the 150th anniversary, including music, lectures, and exhibitions.
