The “This is ABUSE” campaign targets physical and mental abuse, with the two most harrowing videos addressing date rape. Using search as part of this campaign makes sense, but do Google's search results prove helpful for those seeking help?
Over in the UK, the Home Office has recently released a series of PSA YouTube videos aimed at teens and their relationships. Their “This is ABUSE” campaigntargets both physical and mental abuse, with the 2 most harrowing videos addressing the topic of date rape.
The first of these shows a boy and a girl in a room, kissing. But within moments it goes too far despite her protestations. While this is going on the same boy is shown watching behind a glass screen, screaming at himself to stop.
Both of these videos close out with a call to action to search for the keywords “this is abuse”.
Searching for that term on Google.co.uk shows that this site does indeed rank first and, thanks to the sitelinks, provides a number of options for concerned teens to click through to.
At the end of another video though, they have a different set of keywords to search for – “abuse in relationships”. For that particular term the site only ranks No. 2 in google.co.uk, so there’s not the same kind of SERP domination as for “this is abuse”, but as the other sites that comprise Page 1 for that term appear to be informative and helpful, the message is still delivered to those who need to hear it.
Using search as part of this campaign makes a lot of sense, given how connected the youth of today are. Hopefully it does indeed work and some teens can either find the help that they need to escape an abusive relationship, or that it’ll give some of them pause to think about their own behavior and work on themselves and their relationship skills.
