The company on Monday confirmed that beta versions of the iOS 6 platform would be the first not to include a YouTube app by default.
In a statement provided to V3, the company said that its licensing deal with Google had expired, bringing an end to an Apple-developed YouTube player.
“Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store,” the statement read.
While the move will bring an end to the embedded YouTube player on iOS 6 devices, users who run iOS 5 and older versions of the platform will still be able to use the YouTube application.
The cut makes YouTube yet another Google service Apple has scrubbed from its iOS platform. Earlier this year, the company unveiled a new Maps application for iOS which replaced the Google Maps app.
Apple and Google have long been at odds over each company’s respective mobile platforms. Apple has sued a number of Android handset vendors over alleged patent infringement, and former Apple chief Steve Jobs famously vowed to go “thermonuclear war” to beat Google in the mobile space.
