Google announced that it is closing down more of its services, bringing the total for the year to 60. Closing down now are the publisher tool AdSense for Feeds, Classic Plus, which let users add a background image to Google’s homepage, and Places Directory, an Android app for finding things locally.
While these are being retired their features will appear elsewhere and Matias said that anyone missing Adsense for Feeds, for example, can use Feedburner URLs powered by Google. FAQs are available.
Google Storage, which you might have used as part of photo editing system Picasa, is being replaced with Google Drive, and anyone that was paying for storage there will find that rolled into the newer service.
Other items on the chopping block:
- Spreadsheet Gadgets will be slowly turned off next year.
- Google News Badges will vanish beginning Oct. 15.
- +1 Reports in Webmaster Tools will be discontinued Nov. 14.
Also mentioned was the merging of Insights for Search into Google Trends.
“We want people to have a beautifully simple experience when using Google,” said Matias. “These changes will enable us to focus better so that we can do more to help improve the products that millions of people use multiple times a day.”
