Search engines were given an overall score, as well as one for simple and complex searches. Only the overall and simple search scores are shown on the chart. The scale was from 5 to 1, with 5 being best.

Cnet 6/00

Search engines were rated in a variety of categories. Relevancy shows score specifically about how relevant results were deemed to be, on a 1 to 5 scale, with 5 being best. Overall is the search engine’s overall score. Not all search engines were tested.

Search engines were rated in a variety of categories. The first number shows overall accuracy on a 1 to 5 scale, with 5 being best. The second is the score for advance search ability.

PC Magazine 12/98

PC Magazine’s annual survey of search sites. Editors’ Choice awards in different categories went to those marked with EC on the chart, and this is scored as a first place award. Honorable Mentions went to those marked as HM, and this is scored as a second place award.

Review of portal sites, but chart reflects the score awarded for directory offerings. These are categorized lists of sites by topic, not sites generated from search engine results. Sites rated excellent are shown with a 1; good with a 2; fair with a 3. Important note: AltaVista’s directory was rated 2, and since it is powered by LookSmart, that means LookSmart and HotBot’s LookSmart powered directories are also entitled to that score, even though they weren’t actually included in the review.
