Porn Comes to Google TV via Vivid App

Vivid Entertainment now has a dedicated channel at Google TV - the first official adult content channel to be streamed to television sets via the Google TV application. Will porn increase the flaccid sales of Google TV's set top devices?

Vivid Entertainment has launched a channel specifically for Google TV – the first official adult content channel designed to be streamed to television sets via Google TV.

“Vivid for Google TV gives our fans a new way to enjoy Vivid movies in high quality HD and with other benefits that provide a very appealing, highly enjoyable, and user friendly experience,” said Steven Hirsch, co-founder and co-chairman of Vivid, in a press release. “We spent more than a year developing a code base for a robust, standalone Internet-TV channel with a friendly interface for the consumer.”

The Los Angeles Times received an email from a Google spokesperson after they ran their report on this, and were told:

“We will respect the parental controls of devices connected to Google TV. So if you have controls set up through your set-top box or through a V-Chip, those controls will continue to work for TV content shown through Google TV. Users will also be able to implement Safe Search on the Google TV browser (Chrome), and the Safe Search setting will extend to Internet content shown in Google TV search results. In addition, users will have the ability to lock out access to the browser on Google TV through a 4-digit PIN code for access control.”

One thing this channel won’t help with is to increase the flaccid sales of their TV set top devices. In fact, Logitech, which lost $100 million on the Revue set top Google TV boxes, said there are “no plans to introduce another box to replace Revue” once the boxes run out, the Verge reported. CEO Guerrino De Luca called last year’s launch a giant mistake.

Sites that get to the top at Google search for porn and other top searched terms, will get some serious traffic. But ranking for adult terms is hard.

There are 618 million searches for just the term “porn” monthly, according to the Google external keyword tool. More than 100 million of those “porn” searches come from the U.S.

Google has had problems with porn in the past – being sued by adult websites, dragged in to cases of people linking porn to others, and for distributing porn.

This should be worth watching for a number of reasons – how people react and how the search results react!
