Google tests new product carousel design with larger boxes

Google is testing a product carousel design that shows three larger product cards per row instead of the usual four or five.

Google

Google is testing a new design for product carousels in the SERP, including sections like “Popular products.” Previously, these carousels appeared in a single row of four to five products. In the new design, only three products appear in the row, and each box is larger in both width and height.

Here is the new design with three products.

Here is the old design with four products.

I also recorded a video of this. The design is a bit different: the products appear in a single row at first, but when you click on any product, the row changes to show three.

Google seems to be experimenting with the height and width of product cards in these carousels. Personally, I like both the new and the old designs.

Interesting find. The shift from 4-5 cards down to 3 larger ones is a bigger deal for merchants than it looks — fewer competitors visible above the fold means product feed quality matters even more now. We’ve been telling our eCommerce clients at Softcrust that this is exactly why Merchant Center basics deserve more attention: when your card gets bigger, every weak element (blurry image, missing price, no reviews) gets magnified too.

The click-triggered behavior in the video is the part I’d watch most closely — Google seems to be testing whether engagement changes once a user has shown intent. If this rolls out, I’d expect CTR to concentrate on those top 3 cards even more aggressively. Curious whether “Popular products” will behave differently from the standard shopping carousel here.
