Searching with Your Social Network

In our day to day lives, we all rely on word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and associates. Tapping into knowledge and experience from people we trust is not only a great way to save time, but can also lead to interesting or novel discoveries we might not have made on our own.

Can you get the same benefit from sharing your searches with your friends? If someone you trust has already blazed an information trail online, will their experiences be as valuable as a word-of-mouth recommendation?

Maybe—but maybe not. It depends on many things, such as the topics your friends search for, their skill with search tools, and perhaps most importantly, whether they’re willing to share searches that they consider private or sensitive.
